“When Syed Hassan Ahmad Al-Attas moved to Johor, he first
went to Muar, where he planted cloves and coffee, but eventually
moved to Johor Bahru in the 1880’s. he built a house in Bukit
Timbalan which he gave up in 1910 to Sultan Ibrahim to be used
as the unit headquarters of the Johor Military Forces”

“The headquarters of the two units at Bukit Timbalan where
Sultan Ibrahim had his office became known as The Fort, while
the former residence of Syed Hassan Al-Attas was acquired for
the unit headquarters of the JMF”

History,Local Landscapes by P.Lim Pui Huin, 2009, pg: 125-
126)
The above statement is strong evidence that Syed Hassan Ahmad Al-Attas
built a house at Bukit Timbalan around the 1880s and then handed it over
to Sultan Ibrahim to be used as the headquarters of the Johore Military Forces.
However, at that time, Sultan Ibrahim had established The Fort as the
Administrative Office of the Johore Military Forces.
According to the official TSNJ website, in 1888 Sultan Ibrahim renamed
Police Hill to Deputy Hill and later established The Fort to
be used as the Johore Military Forces Administrative Office. In addition,
the Fort building in 1920 was still used as the Johore Military
Forces Office before it was used as the State Legal Advisor
Office building (Source: Abu Bakar Royal Museum, Istana Besar Johor).
"This unit, known as the Timbalan Stia Negri was at first only 60 strong and
their main duty was to assist the Police in the maintenance of order in the
state (Reference: Riwayat Johor Military Forces, pg: 23)."
After His Majesty Sultan Sir Abu Bakar left for Johor,
he ordered that 60 young men from among the Malays be selected
to be constables or in Malay they are called Timbalan Setia Negeri as an aid to the existing Police Force.
His Majesty agreed to appoint Syed Mahmud bin Nong Yahya, a Prince of the Gulf
to be its leader (Reference: Ruwayat Johor Military Forces – Strength of
Johor Soldiers from the beginning).
